This Spring, City Reformed will continue our pattern of holding a reading program through a book of the Bible. This year, we will study the Gospel of Matthew. As in past years, we will have a daily reading plan which is accompanied by daily devotionals on our website. In addition, the sermon series will track with the reading program and our adult Christian education (during the Sunday School hour) will explore themes in the Gospel of Matthew. This allows us to engage with the gospel in multiple formats.
This will be our second year in a row in which we study a gospel. Last year we read through the Gospel of John. With that experience fresh in mind, we will be able to explore ways in which the two gospels are similar and different. Matthew offers an important perspective on Jesus and is distinct from the portrait provided by John. Both are faithful representations of Jesus of Nazareth, but the richness of his character demands multiple frames of reference to appreciate.
The reading program will begin on Sunday, February 1, 2026. It will reach a crescendo on Easter week, and will wrap up with a week of reflections the week after Easter. In total this will be 10 weeks, and about 70 days. In addition to the reading schedule offered below, we have some other resources which are available to accompany you on our journey through Matthew.
